Helping Your Family Feel Better

If you or your loved one struggle with dental pain and sensitivity, it might be time for a root canal. By removing harmful infections from deep inside your tooth, our team at Hometown Dental can help restore your comfort and prevent further issues from developing.

Start today by requesting your appointment.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

Bacteria in plaque and tartar slowly eat away at your enamel and dentin, causing a cavity. As the bacteria works their way to the centre of your tooth, they can infect your tooth pulp and cause:

  • Tooth pain
  • Swollen gums
  • Sensitivity
  • Tooth loss
  • Abscesses

Root canals remove the infected tooth pulp to help alleviate pain and prevent more severe issues from developing. Without the root canal, you may need to extract the tooth entirely.

Children can also have root canals. This treatment, known as a pulpotomy, removes infectected pulp from your child’s crown, but not the roots.

What You Can Expect

When you come in for your root canal, our friendly reception staff will greet you with a smile, check you in, and provide you with some preliminary information before our dentist takes you in for treatment.

We pride ourselves on educating our patients about their treatments, so please feel free to ask questions and stress any concerns before starting the root canal. We are happy to provide videos or demonstrations of what you can expect before we start the treatment.

Examining The Problem

Before we start the root canal, we’ll see how the infection affects your tooth and go over any symptoms you might be experiencing. We may also take an x-ray of the area during this time.

Once we’ve looked at the issue, we’ll apply a local anesthetic to numb the area and place a rubber dental dam to isolate the tooth. From here, we can start the root canal.

Using a drill or our Solea laser device, we’ll create an opening in your tooth to access the pulp. We’ll then clean the infected pulp out of your tooth, reshape the area, and fill it with a temporary material called gutta-percha to prevent future infections.

Though the filling can help prevent future issues from developing, we may still need to perform other restorative treatments to protect your tooth from chips, cracks, and fractures. These treatments may need to happen during a separate appointment.

We’ll place a crown over your tooth in most cases, but we may also place a supporting post inside the tooth to help preserve your tooth’s function and strength. Our goal is to help you use your tooth like normal after your root canal.

Laser Dentistry Could Help Reduce Discomfort

Solea laser technology is a unique way we can perform certain restorative procedures without the need for drills or local anesthetic.

If the sound of drilling makes you nervous or you aren’t a fan of local anesthetics, we could recommend laser dentistry so you can get the help you need.
